Title

Bathymetry of the Western Margins of Western Australia

Narration

Bathymetry is the study and mapping of sea floor topography. It involves obtaining measurements of the depth of the ocean and is equivalent to mapping topography on land.

A bathymetric survey produces a map that charts the contours, depths and hardness of the ocean floor.

Bathymetry maps are available for some of the world’s oceans and seas, however in deep oceans the maps are mostly very low resolution.

In the search for MH370, a survey is being undertaken to provide detailed bathymetric information in the priority search area.

This video shows data acquired by Geoscience Australia in a previous marine survey in deep water, to the northeast of the current search area; it does not show actual data captured in the search for MH370. This data demonstrates the level of detail being gathered to support the search.
